Business Meeting
USMA ‘57 Executive Board
2005 TO 2012

7 AUGUST 2012

Gerry Galloway, President, called his final meeting of his board, commencing at 1802 hours on 7 August of 2012. Present from the outgoing board were Galloway, Larry McNeil, Max Kovel, Paul Schwehm, Bob Faulkender, Bob Gadd, Ted Voorhees and Bill Golden. Absent were Bob Stevens, Dick Stephenson and Tom Kehoe.

Asked to sit in from the new board were Ray Karsian, Walt Rabe and Don Sadler. It should be noted that Max Kovel, Paul Schwehm, Bob Gadd and Bill Golden were voted in to various positions on the new board. Also noted by Galloway was the fact that Tom Kehoe continues to experience health problems and could not attend the meeting. He sent his regards.

Gerry welcomed all to this, his wrap up meeting of his tenure.

ADMINISTRATIVE FUND

The first issue discussed was our financial status of the general administrative fund. Larry McNeil reported that through the efforts of our reunion coordinator, Joan Emmer, that she was able to reduce our penalty to the hotel for rooms not taken to $1199.95. It could have been as much as $5000 based upon the contract. Gerry Galloway stated later in the meeting that not only are hotels asking for commitments on lodging, but meals to be served as well, so the future board should be aware of this issue in future planning.

The current balance of the administrative fund was reported by McNeil as $27,430.18. This balance varies month to month of course due to on-going charges by the AOG for fund management ($127 per month), web site maintenance and interest being credited by AOG for our funds invested by them. Still to be paid is a bill for $228 representing dinner for each of our three class aides at $75 per aide thanking them for their efforts at the 55th reunion. Max Kovel asked if we had a gain over the time period of the 55th reunion and Larry reported that we started reunion planning with funds in the range of $22,000 to $23,000 and now with funds in excess of $27,000, we did have a gain and a substantial fund to pass on to the new board. It was stated that these funds are tax free in New York and New Jersey but not in Virginia where many of our transactions are made.

Galloway then made a proposal to award Joan Emmer a bonus of $1500 for her work and that of her staff for our reunion. A discussion was held and it was felt that Joan did an excellent job and an alternate proposal was made to award $2000 to her. This was the same amount given to her at the 50th reunion. Ted Voorhees seconded the modified award and it passed by unanimous vote. Gerry suggested that the new board forward the award to Joan along with a letter thanking her for her efforts. She has the discretion to distribute the funds as she wishes among her staff.

Max Kovel proposed allowing the AOG to use our Class of 1957 self-guided visitors guide for the Academy as a model for other classes if they wish. The Board agreed. Paul Schwehm will be taking a copy of the guide to the AOG meetings at West Point in August. Gerry requested that the appropriate recognition to other classes who may have had input to the guide be properly recognized in the guide.

GIFT FUND

A discussion ensued as to what obligations still exist for our gift fund. Galloway described the progress to date on the class crest to be installed on a wall of the library coffee shop. The contractor has completed the preliminary carving of the approximately 17” high piece. Gerry has visited the contractor and reports that the crest is about 80% completed. The final product will be finished in gold leaf as decided by the Board several months ago. The final cost of $2919.57 plus installation will be funded through surplus construction monies remaining from the class gift to the library. The crest will be taken to West Point sometime this fall as stated by Paul Schwehm, our new president. To clear up what the accurate status of this fund is, Paul charged our new treasurer, Walt Rabe, to contact the AOG finance (Barbara Fletcher) and sort out what the status of the fund and our obligations are. Walt will bring his findings to the new board in a future meeting.

CLASS MEDALS

Gerry Galloway, stated that the three medals awarded at the 55th reunion to Max, Tom Kehoe and John Stokes were still in production. They will be framed suitable for hanging and will be sent to the recipients upon completion. Gerry is in the process of getting a photo of Tom with the prototype of the medal so all the pictures can be placed on the class web site.

REUNION PHOTOS

The reunion photo CD has not been sent out as of yet. Academy Photo located in the
basement of Cullum Hall had some power problems. Don Sadler will investigate if some of the photos can be placed on the class web site even if copyrighted as long as they can not be copied off the web site.

In final comments, Ted Voorhees mentioned that Joan Emmer was pleased that the new
board has begun early planning for our 60th reunion. Often the larger and newer classes seem to be slow in beginning the planning process.

ADJOURN AND RETIRE

In heartfelt comments, Paul thanked Gerry and the past board for their efforts over the
past seven years, noting especially the efforts of Gerry as President. Gerry in accepting the
recognition thanked his board for their very active and helpful efforts over their term. He
stated that being involved with classmates and the board has been very invigorating to himself and that of others on the board. Ted Voorhees noted that he had a discussion with Bill Ray and that Bill intended to continue on the new board upon the passing of his wife Bamby recently.

The teleconference meeting was adjourned at 2049 hours EST and Gerry Galloway
declared the past board RETIRED.

    Respectively Submitted,

    Raymond T. Karsian
    Class Secretary 1957
